Pear Pressure

If you are someone with a pear-shaped body and looking for ways to style yourself so as to look your personal best, this blog post is for you, read on:

So, before moving on to styling, let us first analyze what a pear-shaped body is. A body shape wherein your thighs and hips are prominent and are on the heavier side than your upper half.

So we conclude that the areas that we need to cover or prevent from being highlighted are your hips and thighs, and the rest of the body can be enhanced so as to make up for the unflattering areas.

This can be done by (a) adding structure to your silhouette and (b) using statement pieces to doll yourself up.

To make it simpler, let us take an example:do you remember, during your school days when you got low grades in some subjects while scoring great in others, and how very cleverly you presented the great ones before the 'not so good' ones to your family while breaking your academic result to them so as to balance the whole effect? Well, that is exactly what we are going to do here. We'll make sure to enhance those great areas of our body and make them appear attractive so that the eyes of the onlooker automatically captures them first shifting the attention from the not so good areas. This way the body is perceived as a whole rather than highlighting the flaws.

This brings us to our first point, of adding structure:

  • It can be done by picking outfits or those pieces of clothing that provide a certain broadness to your shoulders, hence adding the required structure. Example: Blazers, Pantsuits.

  • Another way to do this is to experiment with various necklines and opt for those that accentuate your bust area, example: sweetheart neckline and/or widen your shoulders, example: boat necks.

  • You can even lay your hands on strapless tops and dresses if you're in a mood to play it bold.

  • To even out your your body's proportion, go for layering. Work with layers on your torso, by wearing shrugs, jackets, scarves, etc.

  • Add drama to your sleeves! Play with different kinds of voluminous sleeves that catches attention immediately. Puffed sheer sleeves, bat sleeves, bell sleeves are some suggestions to start with.

  • Wear dark-coloured bottoms. Try avoiding too skinny jeans, pants or trousers.

  • Skirts or Dresses should either be of knee-length or ankle-length.

Now comes the option to use statement accessory/jewellery pieces. But make sure to keep it minimal by going for one piece at a time and not overdoing it.

The main idea here is to grab the attention of the onlooker and focus it on smaller areas of interest, thereby skipping the unflattering regions.

  • Adorn heavy earrings or statement neckpieces

  • If you're a lazy lady and don't want to accessorize explicitly, you can go for tops or shirts with embellishments and/or elements like bows, ruffles, sequins.

  • Go for bright hues and prominent prints.

  • Complimenting this, you can sport colourful and bold footwear choices.

And now my dear, you're good to go and flaunt your style, without any peer pear pressure!
